Holiday Road
Many of us will be hitting the road this summer for our family vacation time. Travel by car is still the number one way most families travel as it is less expensive and gives some flexibility on scheduling and fun little stops along the way.
Clark Griswold: Hey, hey, easy kids. Everybody in the car. Boat leaves in two minutes… or perhaps you don’t want to see the second largest ball of twine on the face of the earth, which is only four short hours away?
Being together in a car for multiple hours and miles is a fun way to spend time together as a family. Yes I said that and didn’t roll my eyes…or did I?
ClarkGriswold: Why aren’t we flying? Because getting there is half the fun. You know that.
How about saying it CAN be a fun way but let’s be real it can also be very trying on … everyone.
Kids get bored, traffic stalls to a stand still, snacks get spilled, tablets run out of batteries, GPS signals are lost and hot dogs from gas stations are never a good idea. Yes the stress can reach everyone in the car turning a fun trip into a miserable time.
To help prevent your vacation from becoming a real scene from the National Lampoon’s Vacation movie here’s my pre-check “we will survive this” list.
What is that smell?
Oh yes there is nothing quite like the closeness of being all together in a car trapped by the wafting stench close to what death must smell like.
Stinky sneakers that your son slipped off, the baby’s diaper fills up, the husband or dog farts. Oh yes that’s the stuff of fond vacation memories right?
Take heart there is relief.
Before the trip, invest in a car diffuser. There are many varieties that include plug in to the portable electronic slots or just a clip to the vents.
