For those of us that have to change the clocks each Spring and Fall, it can take while to adjust our bodies. This is a shocking transition for many of us, especially children. It’s hard to go asleep “on time” and it’s tiring in the morning to be waking up “earlier” with the clock set an hour earlier than it was previously. It’s estimated it takes 2-3 weeks for the majority of people to completely adjust to this change in time. There are a few oil blends I’m trying to help transition our family a little easier into this new time shift. Bedtime Relaxation Before going to bed, it’s important to obviously stick to your normal routine, only doing so an hour earlier than you were before. I’ve also found boosting the oils I use to promote relaxation and using more complex blends is helping. Here are a couple diffuser blends I’ve tried. Serenity-Patchouli-Breathe Together these 3 oils in a diffuser are complex and comforting. They relax the mind, ease stress and encourage us to breathe deeply. Some time ago I was having a very cute conversation with a sweet little 4 year old girl about princesses. She had just received from her grandparents a new Elsa and Anna doll set. She and I were talking about what favorite food each princess liked best. Amazingly the foods often matched the color of their dresses each time! I am a long time user of Aveda hair products. My hair is naturally curly and it needs some extra conditioner to keep the curls from getting frizzy, especially since I do like to straighten my hair for work.  As much as I like my curls, there is a time and place for curly and sometimes important meetings and work isn’t the place. It’s much akin to the idea that glasses make you look smarter. Over the years of trying different products for my hair I have come to believe that yes it does matter what shampoo and conditioner you use on your hair as well as what products you use for styling. Regardless of hair type, there are formulas of hair products that will work better for you and give you the desired results you want whether that is extending hair color, protecting from split ends, controlling fizz, volume, etc. It is as important as a good haircut. In my transition to natural products in use around our home, I changed my beloved Aveda Brilliant Shampoo and Conditioner for the doTERRA shampoo and conditioner. I do however still use my Brilliant styling products and do not intend to deviate from those. Those of you with curly hair will understand perfectly when I say, once you find a product that works on your curly hair you stay with it FOREVER. As much as I love my Aveda shampoo and conditioner I was brave and we tried the doTERRA shampoo and conditioner.  So far, we have gone through two bottles of the doTERRA shampoo and conditioner. This is my opinion and feedback based on this experience. It does smell wonderful! I really like the orange that comes out in the blend of oils. The shampoo does give a nice rich lather and like my Aveda shampoo you don’t have to use a lot to get the lather through thick hair My hair feels clean after use. My hair doesn’t feel waxy or weighed down from product The conditioner also contains a really nice texture and applies nicely through my hair I have noticed since switching my hair is more frizzy than it was before. It still feels soft and doesn’t tangle with the curls but it does seem to go to frizz more frequently even with still using the Aveda styling products My hair feels drier overall. I do attribute this to the change in shampoo and conditioner  since that’s the only part that’s changed As much as I love doTERRA and the many products that I have switched to natural alternatives this is one where I’m not finding the awesome results I hoped for. In this case, my opinion is it is not a product failure but rather I believe the shampoo and conditioner are just not formulated for my hair type. I think these  particular products are ideal for hair types that fall into the normal category of not needing regular extra moisture or conditioning. They work and I would use them in a pinch but for every day needs of my hair they’re just not performing to the level I was getting with my Aveda products when it comes to managing curly hair. I do hope doTERRA expands their hair product line to accommodate different hair types as I would definitely try again. For now though we will be going back to Aveda Brilliant and waiting patiently for the scientists at doTERRA to find us a magical formula for curly hair types. Interested in more? When Spring comes around I instantly want to go outside and play in the garden, cleaning up the beds, checking the spring bulbs popping out of the ground and fussing with cutting back things. As much as I love this time of year, the area we live in is notorious for pine tree pollen.  You can sometimes literally see a green blog of pollen floating in the air like fumes trailing after an airplane in the sky.  It’s beautiful and disturbing at the same time. With this weather change many of us will suffer from an uptick in the number and types of headaches we may experience.  Spring headaches have a way of taking the fun out of enjoying Spring’s warm, bright weather. Thankfully there are natural ways to manage them that won’t leave you unable to function and stuck in bed with a throbbing head. I love this info-graphic from Dr. Axe outlining the type of headache, common causes and oils that can help eliminate the pain. This is a great 1 page reference sheet to make sure the oils you are going to use for your headache are the right choice. I try to avoid taking medicine as much as possible. This may not always work with a headache but before I reach for an aspirin or other form of pill I will try essential oils  first. When a sinus headache hits me I will dab a drop of Peppermint on my forehead and behind my ears. This works great and gives some rather instant relief. It is soothing and provides relief. Recently,  a Wellness Advocate on my doTERRA team had a really big problem enrolling someone. It was something I have never seen happen before. Quite seriously,  you name what could go wrong to make a bad first impression to a new customer and it happened all in this same situation. The core issue in this situation was technology failed in several areas and people failed to recognize how to provide service. A lot of time, phone calls, emails, texts and instant messages were in high gear to get it fixed for this customer. Technology fails, every body understands that. However, sometimes we let the technology blips be the excuse and it creates more than just a one time problem. When we say service cannot occur because of technology, we limit our service opportunities and lower our delivery standards.  We reduce our business growth potential, relationship capacity and external impressions others have of us. We are the face to our business not our computers. I use the word excuse because that’s what it is… an excuse. Service is actually a person-to-person activity that can and should occur completely free of technology as much as possible. GASP! It’s SHOCKING I know! What is Your Business? Selling product through a network marketing organization is sales. That is your job. Service is your business. Regardless of your business type it all comes down to service. A lot of business transactions, sales and service occur over the Internet and through technology. There is nothing wrong with that business model as long as it also includes in the service experience a personal connection to your customers. It is so important to establish a rapport and relationship with your customers so they trust you, want to give their hard earned money to you and bring you new customers in the form of referrals. If you don’t invest in those relationships, then you will be constantly chasing sales. Service Growth Creating new contacts cold, meaning you have no prior connection to that person or business, is the hardest and most expensive way to grow your business. It can work but you will put in a lot more hours, money and effort to establish yourself in this situation and convince them they should purchase through you.  There is also a higher rejection rate with this approach. Think about when you started your business. What was the hardest part? I’m betting, like me, it was making that first contact to someone and convincing them to enroll or purchase through you. On the other end of the spectrum we have referrals. Referrals are the best, least expensive and easiest way to grow you business even though there is still work involved. It requires you to establish a good solid, genuine relationship with your existing customers. That relationship should be founded on integrity, trust, loyalty and above all excellent service in all situations. Service Delivery So let’s talk about the situation I described at the beginning. There are some excellent examples of good service delivery and not so good. First, the Wellness Advocate apologized in person to this new customer. Excellent personal connection reassuring her we would get this fixed. If you’re not local with your customer, then do a face-to-face conference call that allows you to look the customer in the eye and make this connection. Next, the Wellness Advocate called customer service. She did not tell this new customer here’s the number to call so she could self-serve and fix her own problem. She did it herself.  That’s important for a couple different reasons: You are the face of your business, not the company you represent products for, not the customer service representative at the end of the phone line or online chat.  YOU!!! This action establishes trust between you and the new customer. They know they can go to you for their problems and YOU will get them resolved If customer service cannot resolve the problem(s) then YOU can escalate on behalf of YOUR customer. This is your business and that is your customer to take care of so why would you want to let anyone else handle this situation? In this situation, we did escalate, actually a couple times to our upline and others at doTERRA corporate. Here’s where you start to see some opportunities for service improvements: The responses from those helping us resolve these problems were not timely and we had to continually follow up to get updates. It took over a week to get everything resolved and in fact we are still waiting on final confirmation  as I write this entry It really felt in some cases we had to keep this on their radar to get attention on it. That’s really unfortunate and will be addressed but again an excellent example for why you need to making these calls and fixing the problem and not your customer. You have to be responsible for this situation and unafraid to bug people until it is officially fixed If that customer cancels or does no further business it will be you that realizes that loss in your business One person said it would fix itself and we shouldn’t worry about it for a day or two If you think that is OK to say to a customer or someone working on behalf of a customer with a problem, then seriously ask yourself why you’re in the business you’re in and how successful you are going to be long term Take every problem seriously and get it fixed as quickly as possible ALWAYS WOW!  This one truly blows me away It was the customer’s computer causing the problem In this case, the problem was replicated on the customer’s computer, iPAD and the Wellness Advocate’s computer.  The problem was not the customer’s computer. BEFORE you say this to a customer or someone working on behalf of a customer, you better be 100% certain it is the customer’s computer. Otherwise, you just insulted your customer’s intelligence and made yourself look really bad When the problem is technology, do your research. Involve the right people who know the system and get it thoroughly checked end-to-end for where the problem is and how it can be fixed Along the way, we understandably saw this wonderful new customer begin to become frustrated. We were at risk for losing her while we continued to work through the problems she was experiencing. We asked doTERRA and the upline for help in making this right for the customer now. Since the customer missed the Buy One Get One Sale promotion because she couldn’t get into her account, we asked the upline to all chip in and get her one of the deals we knew she would most enjoy We asked doTERRA to credit her account with some points as a way to demonstrate the company understood this inconvenience and was committed to making it right We sent her a personal gift and note apologizing for the problems and demonstrating our commitment to service and support of her In the end, thankfully, these problems were resolved.  Even more important, we didn’t lose this customer. There are quite a few articles floating around lately about the harm essential oils are causing on families and pets. While accidents can happen and there can be different reactions to oils, I hope these stories are not because of misuse. Essential oils need to be handled responsibly. This means understanding how to use, purposes of use and the benefits and side effects from use. To me responsible use includes: 1. Safety Understanding how to use oils safely on yourself, your family, the pets and your home. Become educated. Essential oils are potent and improper use, like applying too much, can cause problems. Don’t use until fully understanding the ways to use the oil or using it incorrectly. They should be treated like medicine and handled with care and respect. 2. Purpose Each oil has a purpose and some have many purposes that are beneficial. Take the time to read and research the oils purposes, benefits and sourcing. Experience the oil individually before you mix it with other oils, to see how you, your family, pets and home respond to it. Like medicine, each of us responds differently to different types of treatments. 3. Common sense In all things use basic common sense. When in doubt take a minute to think about it. Don’t just dump a bunch of oils in your diffuser and then wonder why your pets are acting ill and your head hurts. 4. Quality matters Unlike pharmaceuticals, it is not advised to use generics for essential oil. Check ingredients, sourcing and quality before purchasing and using. Even if you do all of the above correctly, if you’re using poor quality product and chemical based oils you could be causing harm.
