How to Unblock Your Chakras

Your energy centers can become blocked or imbalanced for a variety of reasons. Top of that list is usually stress, followed by emotions, and environmental factors. Your lifestyle often plays a role in how often and severely the chakras become blocked as well.

We don't always realize when blocks happen but it can greatly influence how we feel, our energy, outlook on life, and response to situations. It can even lend to more severe concerns like disrupted sleep, trouble concentrating, anxiety and depression, physical pain, and illness.

While it is highly recommended to work with a trained professional when you need to work your chakras, there are some things you can try on your own. I recommend to my clients giving these a try first when they notice a need and think their chakras could be impacted. If it doesn't help or only offers temporary relief then its time to come see me for more extensive help.

Ways to DIY Balance Your Own Chakras

Mantras

Using a dedicated mantra has the ability to restore your energy centers. This is best practiced by having the mantra defined and ready in advance. Using one that is intentional for you and carries special meaning also helps. Religious versus also work here. These do not have to be elaborate or long either.

Some great simple examples can be:

  • I am balanced.

  • I hear my body and I honor what it needs.

  • It is well within my soul.

These are examples of mantras to use for specific chakra areas:

Use mantras when you are sitting comfortably in a quiet space, grounding in the open sunshine, or before bed are ideal times.

Meditation, yoga, tai chi and qi-qong are also meaningful ways to express and use mantras for releasing blocked energies.

Tapping

Tapping is a method of using your finger pads at specific points on the body to release energy. By tapping in a pattern on designated points we can feel a rush of energy at the site and begin to feel fresh energy move across the body.

You can include your mantra with this technique. Doing so, can enhance the experience and deepen the results.

My recommendation to clients is to begin tapping at the points they believe their energy is blocked. The stomach-liver area is a good one if you are not certain. Tap repeatedly in this area for a period of 30 seconds up to 1 minute. Then transition to another point and repeat to all the points. I recommend repeating the pattern 3-4 times.

Never press or hit yourself violently in this practice. Tapping is very light, intentional movements to stimulate the area. It should not be painful or forcefully applied.

Meditation

Meditation takes many forms but I find the one that works the best for supporting chakras is quite simple. When we intentionally focus our attention inward to the areas across our body we can introduce deep relaxation and breaks in blocked energy.

I recommend to clients that they sit in a quiet space and start our with regular breathing. As they relax it's ok to close the eyes and deepen the breaths. As you deepen the breath visualize your breath coming up from the soles of the feet and out the top of the head. Often you will find when you start, your breath feels like it gets stuck along the way. This is your indication of where energy blocks are and you can continue deep breathing to "loosen" and support breaking up that block.

Aromatherapy

This is my preferred approach when I am self-applying techniques to unblock chakras. I will combine it with other methods depending on what is going on.

There are certain essential oils that work really well to unblock chakras. Simply applying and smelling these oils can help the limbic system in the brain support unblocking energy centers.

Root Chakra - Spikenard and Vetiver

Spikenard is supportive of our ability to experience and express gratitude while providing a deeply grounding effect. Vetiver provides emotional strength and encourages the cultivation of honor. We want these aspects because the root chakra is associated with our connection to our earth element. It belongs to our sense of security, belonging, pleasure, instinct, and intuition.

I like to apply these two oils to the big toes as well as the base of the spine.

Sacral Chakra - Lavender and Pink Pepper

This chakra is located in the upper pelvis area. It represents our creative nature, endurance, self-confidence and sensuality. It can become blocked when we carry guilt or rejection.

If lavender is not your favorite aroma, you can swap it for ylang ylang, rose, wild orange, tangerine, patchouli or helichrysum.

We are looking for nurturing in this chakra as well as the confidence to express our creativity, sexuality and vulnerability. This pairing helps with body image issues, shame, and sexual concerns.

Aromatically and topically applying these oils is helpful.

Solar Plexus - Black Pepper and Cedarwood

The solar plexus is located at the navel and aligned to the fire element. It represents our personal power, motivation, and personal will. It becomes blocked when we experience shame, victimization, stress, worry, doubt and commitment issues.

This makes perfect sense why many people experience digestive discomfort during times of stress!

The oils in this chakra help to evolve rigid patterns and thinking, including over thinking, and works to balance the mind and emotions that are running rapidly in times of stress.

Heart Chakra - Rose and Black Spruce

This chakra is about the air element. It is in the center of the breastbone and represents love, forgiveness, conflict resolution, compassion, and divine experiences. We can experience blocks of energy here when we feel rejection, non-acceptance, and are rejecting our own beauty.

Applying essential oils in this area supports love towards ourself and others while working towards compassion and gentleness in the process of releasing what has hurt us.

Throat Chakra - Chamomile and Frankincense

The throat chakra is related to the ether element. It represents self-expression, clarity, truth, and our intuition. It is about using our words and discerning truth. We can become imbalanced and blocked in this area when we feel we have not been listened to, are being dismissed or discredited, and are not trusting our intuition.

These oils help open the guidance from our inner self while stabilizing our spirit so we can use our voice. They help to give the ability to read the environment energy and prevent reaction that is overly emotional and disconnected from our own truth.

Third Eye Chakra - Lemon and Sandalwood

The powerful third eye is between the brows. It relies on all the elements combined for its energy. The third eye is about our concentration, seeing the timeline of our life and balancing what is ahead on our journey. It becomes closed and blocked when we have high levels of exhaustion, stress, and emotional conflict.

The oils for this chakra are purifying, cleansing and help build the mental balance we need in alignment with the emotions, body and spirit. They help us organize, improve versatility and expand thinking relying on our inner wisdom and awareness.

Crown Chakra - Chinese Rice Flower and White Lotus Flower

The crown chakra is above all the elements and is located at the top of our heads. This is an area for our consciousness, understanding truth of higher connection, and enlightenment. We can become blocked in this area when our thinking has been closed minded, we have unhealthy attachments, a high degree of boredom or fatigue.

The oils in this chakra help with temporal and divine connection, philosophical perspective and spirituality. They work to stimulate the desire to be self-actualized, and learn from our journey at a deeper level.

To get the oils mentioned in this article, please only use a high quality organic product. This is what I personally use and recommend.

The goal of chakra balancing is to restore energy flow evenly through the body. Unblocking pathways creates the ability for the body to restore balance. You may feel tired after working on your chakras on your own or with a professional. After any work with your chakras it is important to follow these tips:

  • Hydrate with pure water. I recommend clients drink distilled water for the next 24 hours following chakra work.

  • Listen to your body. You may need rest and your energy may not be full steam. Please do not rush back into a stressful day immediately after a chakra session.

  • Notice how you feel. Clients usually say they feel like the waves on the ocean where they are flowing in and out of things at ease. This is exactly the sensation we are striving for as it means your body is working through restoring balance.
