Organic Cotton Tampons: Are They a Healthier Choice for Women?

I have gone almost all of my menstruation years using one specific brand of tampons. It was what I was shown to use and while I knew other brands existed, I never tried them. What I used worked and well periods are just not something you want to really mess with when it comes to ensuring you have it covered.

That was all fine until I started reading what was actually in the tampons I was using. Considering the advancement of organic tampon choices available these days, I decided to explore and break the ingrained only use this kind loyalty to see if it was worth the hype. Here's what I personally found on the subject and experienced myself.

When it comes to feminine hygiene, many women are becoming more conscious of the products they use. One topic gaining attention is the comparison between organic cotton tampons and regular tampons. Though they may look similar at first glance, these products have key differences that can impact both your health and the environment. Let’s dive into the reasons why organic cotton tampons may offer a healthier and safer alternative to traditional tampons.

What Are Organic Cotton Tampons?

Organic cotton tampons are made from cotton that has been grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. They are also free from harmful chemicals like chlorine, dyes, and fragrances. Organic cotton tampons aim to offer a more natural option, reducing exposure to synthetic materials and potentially harmful substances.

As a naturopath, I fully recommend any product we can use that does not include ingredients harmful to our health. Chemicals, pesticides and toxins are not good for our health. They are certainly not needed in our vaginas either. Many women are like me though and were taught you stick with a specific brand and as a result we may not realize what is in those tampons we have been using.

What Are Regular Tampons Made Of?

Most conventional tampons are made from a blend of cotton and synthetic materials like rayon. While cotton itself is natural, non-organic cotton is often treated with pesticides during cultivation. Furthermore, the rayon fibers in regular tampons undergo chemical treatments, including chlorine bleaching, which can leave behind trace amounts of toxins like dioxins—chemicals that are associated with hormone disruption and cancer.

This is concerning on many levels. Women's health is already an area least understood by the medical professionals. It is also very concerning that is acceptable by our government and considered safe.

Health Benefits of Organic Cotton Tampons

No Exposure to Pesticides or Chemicals

Organic cotton tampons eliminate exposure to chemicals that may come from conventional cotton farming, such as pesticides and herbicides. Since vaginal tissues are highly absorbent, using organic products reduces the risk of these chemicals entering your bloodstream.

Lower Risk of Irritation and Allergic Reactions

Many regular tampons contain added fragrances or dyes, which can cause irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Organic tampons are generally free from these irritants, making them a safer choice for those prone to discomfort or irritation during their period.

Reduced Risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition linked to tampon use. Some studies suggest that the synthetic materials in regular tampons, such as rayon, may increase the risk of TSS. Organic cotton tampons are free from these synthetic fibers, and although the risk of TSS still exists, some believe that natural fibers may be less likely to contribute to the problem.

Chemical-Free Bleaching

Many regular tampons are bleached with chlorine, which can produce harmful byproducts like dioxins. Organic tampons, however, are often whitened using safer methods like hydrogen peroxide, which doesn’t leave behind harmful residues.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable

In addition to being better for your body, organic tampons are also kinder to the environment. Organic cotton farming uses fewer natural resources, and the lack of synthetic chemicals makes these tampons biodegradable, reducing their environmental impact.

Environmental and Ethical Considerations

Choosing organic cotton tampons doesn’t just benefit your health; it also supports more sustainable farming practices. Organic cotton farming uses less water, helps maintain soil health, and reduces chemical runoff into water systems. Additionally, many brands that produce organic tampons are committed to ethical labor practices and cruelty-free production, making them a conscientious choice.

My Personal Experience with Organic Cotton Tampons

Knowing all of the facts above, helped me feel comfortable exploring the different options for organic tampons. I tried a few different brands and overall they worked similar to what I had been using. I would say the biggest difference I saw was in the applicator design. Most were flimsy due to using less plastic. That can be inconvenient but wasn't necessarily a show stopper for me.

The second difference I noticed was in the absorbancy ratio. Super and Super Plus for example are not necessarily the same as the Super and Super Plus of what I had been using. You do need to read the information to ensure you get the right absorbancy for your needs and not just assume because you used one of the regular brand that it will be comparable.

The primary drawback to organic cotton tampons is their cost. Due to the more labor-intensive farming practices and the absence of chemicals, organic tampons can be more expensive than regular options. However, for many women, the benefits to their health and the environment outweigh the additional cost. I realize that is not always an option for some of us and hopefully as more demand for better products emerges we can all have the choice of what we use that reduces toxins and chemicals.

Notes

My Personal Rating

Overall a good experience and I would use them again. I did find the absorbancy was not quite what regular tampons are so you may need to go up if you have a heavier period

****

Good absorbancy but the applicator was not always working well and I found it flimsy. I did like that it was a compact tampon.

***

Good experience. Applicator free option which if you've not used that kind before can be frustrating at first. They do have some with applicators.

****

Cardboard applicator which is environmentally friendly but can be problematic with heavier period days

Word of Caution: Be aware that major manufacturers are purchasing organic tampon companies and changing ingredients in some of these products. You do need to be a savvy consumer and continually check on the source of your personal care products to ensure they have not added undesirable ingredients to them.

Are Organic Tampons Healthier?

Organic cotton tampons offer a safer, more natural option compared to traditional tampons made with synthetic materials and chemicals. They can help reduce your exposure to potential toxins, lower the risk of irritation, and support environmental sustainability. While they may be more expensive, the peace of mind that comes with using a cleaner product may be worth the investment. For those looking to make healthier, eco-conscious choices, organic cotton tampons are a step in the right direction.
