Preparing for the worse and hoping for the best is certainly a saying I have lived by and at times continue to rely on for my guidance. This wise saying has seemed to be helpful at time and while life can be pretty intimidating at times, it has been good to have the proverbial spare tire at hand. Like most of my life too, this advice has taken on the level of obsession that goes well beyond its good backup planning and as I have found takes a toll on health and mindful thinking that supports well-being.

What I mean is, this very thinking admittedly gets out of control sometimes with endless loop of what-if scenarios thinking. Well if one thing can go wrong and I prepare for that, what about the 1000 other things that can also go wrong? It is tends to steer towards the negative outcomes that could be possible and before you know it you are spiraling down into constant fear, worry, anxiety, over-thinking, and negative thought patterns.

It is natural to think the worse.

Even with the most optimistic outlook we can't help but to have nagging thoughts of what if things don't come out as rosy as we hope? That spare tire thinking is wise after all but to what point should we prepare and when does it become over-preparation bordering on prepper and hoarder?

This happens by design because the human brain is programmed to protect us and work from a point of ensuring our survival. That often occurs through considering the negative conclusions and what-ifs. There can be comfort in knowing we have considered the negative outcomes because if they happen we can be ready to deal with it. It lessens our disappointment too because we almost expected it.

While there may be wisdom in anticipating and planning for the worse, there are implications this creates to our health at a cellular level. It influences how we respond to situations, how we think about problems and creates emotional strain to our feelings. This can be disruptive to our health by introducing stress on the nervous system and disconnection across our pillars of health.

Negative and Positive Words Influence Health

Negative Conclusions Creates Disconnection in our Senses

Whenever negativity comes into our day there is an imprint made to our body. Negativity causes stress to rise, our nervous system to trigger fight or flight responses, our mind to start preparing for war potentially, and all system placed on alert. That stress wears on the body that long term can cause illness.

The other thing that happens is when our body is in high alert mode waiting for the other shoe to drop in our negative conclusion we're anticipating, is that our digestive system slows, reproductive function is turned off, and senses overloaded. That is where we increase our immune system stress that makes us vulnerable to illness occurs. It is also where we lose sight, hearing, touch, and smell function because we are only seeking out the suspected threats and negative options. Our systems have been overwritten to only look for the bad.

We begin to tell ourselves stories about what will happen and create even more scenarios that all end with negative outcomes. We stop hearing and processing other information that could be helpful in preventing and resolving any negative experiences too.

Again, while an ounce of prevention may be good, the truth is we may be completely off base with our assumed outcome that could happen. Essentially, we create a lot of problems that never get realized and put ourselves in high stress mode in the process.

Impacts to Your Health from Negative Conclusions

It isn't that every negative conclusion your think of has an impact on your health. Rather it is the continual negative thinking in this direction that leads to risk in your health.

Increased Stress Levels

Negative assumptions activate the body's fight-or-flight response, leading to a surge in stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Chronic activation of this system can:

  • Raise blood pressure.

  • Suppress the immune system.

  • Contribute to anxiety disorders.

Weakened Immune System

Persistent negativity and stress weaken the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections and slower to recover from illnesses.

Emotional Exhaustion

Negative thought patterns drain emotional energy, leading to:

  • Burnout.

  • Reduced motivation.

  • Difficulty finding joy in everyday life.

This can lead to adrenal exhaustion and fatigue that grows in complexity and is draining to the body.

Impaired Cognitive Function

Constantly assuming the worst can overwork the brain’s problem-solving and reasoning centers, potentially resulting in:

  • Poor decision-making.

  • Memory issues.

  • Decreased focus and productivity.

Physical Manifestations

Negative mental habits can manifest physically, contributing to:

  • Tension headaches and migraines.

  • Gastrointestinal issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

  • Chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease.

  • Weight gain from emotional eating triggers

  • Sleep disruptions

Breaking the Cycle of Negative Conclusions to Protect Your Health

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness encourages living in the present moment and observing thoughts without judgment. Techniques like deep breathing or meditation can help interrupt negative thought loops.

Challenge Your Assumptions and Interpretations

Ask yourself:

  • "What evidence do I have to support this conclusion?"

  • "Is there another possible explanation for this situation?"

This reframes negative assumptions into neutral or positive possibilities.

Ask for clarity if you are uncertain. Sometimes we really didn't hear the information we need.

Engage in Positive Self-Talk

Replace negative thoughts with affirmations or reminders of past successes. For example, instead of “I’ll fail,” try “I’ve faced challenges before and overcome them.”

Energy Pathway Support

Natural medicine has several techniques to help release negative vibrations and held negative emotions from the body. This can be a powerful tool in helping reset cycles of negative thinking and conclusions. Services such as Emotion Code, pranic therapy, chakra balancing and sound baths can be helpful in resetting the imprint of negativity and patterns that are invoked within the body.

Flower Essences

Flower essences are energy medicine. These non-aromatic plant energies are used to support emotional and mental navigation of behaviors to support change. They help align our energy to ensure positive balanced flow. A specific blend is prepared for you based on your assessment with a trained practitioner.

Changing the Imprint of Negative Conclusions on Your Health

Jumping to negative conclusions may feel like a protective mechanism, but it often causes more harm than good. Having a reasonable Plan B is important but overdoing it can create havoc in our health. By becoming aware of these thought patterns and actively working to replace them with balanced perspectives, we can reduce stress, improve mental and physical health, and cultivate a more positive outlook on life.
