Using Essential Oils Internally

When you ingest an essential oil there can be some incredible benefits delivered throughout your body very quickly. I regularly take essential oils internally including:

  1. doTERRA Life Long Vitality Supplements

  2. Serenity softgels

  3. DigestZen

  4. TerraZyme

  5. Slim & Sassy

  6. Many citrus oils in my water

  7. Peppermint

  8. Oils used in cooking (Basil, Oregano, Cilantro, Thyme, etc)

There are however some oils that should not be used in this method and doing so could result in harm to yourself.

The easiest way to tell if an oil can be used internally with doTERRA is to look at the label. If the bottle contains a label with the words “Supplement Facts” above the ingredients section of the label this means it can be used internally.

When using any essential oil internally, aromatically or topically quality does matter. Only Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) oils are intended for internal use when it is labeled as a means to use that oil. It is important to verify the oil you are using is CPTG before using it.  I personally would not use any oil in any method if it were not CPTG but that is  my own personal preference and I know there are others who may have a different opinion when it comes to this subject.  I chose doTERRA oils because all of their oils are CPTG to the highest level possible and I trust their commitment to purity.

To help navigate this tricky area, I have listed out the doTERRA single oils that do not contain this wording on the label and therefore internal use is not advised.

  1. Arborvitae

  2. Birch

  3. Cedarwood

  4. Cypress

  5. Douglas Fir

  6. Jasmine

  7. Ravensara

  8. Rose

  9. Spikenard

  10. Vetiver

  11. White Fir

  12. Wintergreen

  13. Yarrow

I have not included the doTERRA blend oils at this time but the same wording will appear on the bottle if it is able to be internally used or not.

When using oils internally, as in the other methods, small doses are sufficient. That typically means 1-2 drops of the oil only.

To use an oil internally, you can place a drop under your tongue, take it in a capsule, through a beverage or with food.
