How to Fit Self-Care into Real Life

I admit it, I’m very bad about letting other things take priority over taking care of myself.

It’s incredibly easy to do.

Can you relate to any of this?

  1. You have to go to work every day and get your job done. Sometimes that means working long hours, skipping lunch or eating crap food because you don’t have time or access to get to something better. Or sometimes you’re just so stressed out at work you need some crap food to be able to make it through the rest of the day.

  2. The commute to work is crammed up and you’re running late because the school bus came late to get the kids. Or the afternoon traffic has an accident and you’re rushing so you won’t be late getting the kids and have to pay a late fine.

  3. You have to get the kids going every morning so they won’t be late for school. How many times a day do you say, “Come on, you’re running late?” to your children in the morning when they are dragging behind.

  4. You have to get the grocery shopping and bills taken care of

  5. You need to keep up with the laundry, housework and dishes

  6. You need to remember appointments, vet visits, play dates, doctor appointments, practices and games, hair appointments and so on

  7. You need to make sure homework gets done, baths are taken and stories read

Trust me, you are not alone in this feeling.

I hate it when I’m feeling so tired from everything else that it feels like a chore to get on the floor to play a board game with my son. That really bothers me.

By the time you go to bed each night you’re exhausted and like me you’ve probably not done much for yourself in the day.  I’m going to say this with all respect and love for those that can do this but getting up at 4 or 5 AM to exercise is the most horrible torture treatment I can imagine.

Seriously, you think I want to get up when it’s still dark out, work out and then deal with stuff listed above? How is that rewarding? If that works for you, great! Keep going! For many of us sleep is already not going well and includes lots of tossing, turning, waking up a few times, over thinking and worrying at night and generally just not sleeping well. So after a night like that how are you supposed to get up at 4 or 5 and go run on a treadmill?

More of us say we have feelings of loneliness and isolation than ever before yet we are so highly connected more so than any other time in history.  This is of little wonder if you look at the list above! By the time we have time to focus on relationships and things that enrich our lives, we’re beat! So we turn to the television and tablets and “connect” that way – which isn’t connecting at all.

I think the larger question is how do we change this vicious cycle? How do we take control of things to the point where we can focus on ourselves and the relationships we need in our lives?

I admit I don’t have this figured out yet.

What I do know is some things I’m finding work and others I’m having to really struggle through to find answers on. Here’s what I’ve found so far that’s helping:

  1. Diffusing essential oils at night to help improve sleep. I use doTERRA Lavender, Breathe and Vetiver. Sometimes I’ll add in some Patchouli when I think I’m going to be over-thinking and worrying all night. We also diffuse in our son’s room at night for him to sleep well – 1 drop Breathe and 1 drop Lavender.

  2. I take 2 doTERRA Serenity soft gels before bed. These won’t put you to sleep but they will help you relax so you are more likely to sleep. They support your body’s ability to produce melatonin  whereas taking sleeping aids makes our body dependent on those aids to do this function.

  3. Life Long Vitality supplements – every day.  I will say I actually look forward to taking them because I actually feel better

  4. This has been the #1 thing I have noticed helping me make positive changes in my health. When you feel good it’s easier to do other things that increase that feeling, right?

  5. TerraZyme digestive support and doTERRA PB Assist + also every day.  I admit I’ve always had a problem with not being regular. This helps a lot!

  6. Mito 2 Max – I recently started taking this to help with energy and stamina. I am currently taking 1 in the morning and will eventually increase to 2. One in the morning and 1 in the afternoon

  7. doTERRA Balance on bottom of my feet every day. This is helping with emotions and keeping things in perspective

  8. doTERRA OnGuard to bottom of feet. When you are under a lot of stress your immune system needs extra support. This has helped a lot with prevention of illness and keeping you moving

  9. A walk or outside play time with the kid. This one I’m still trying to do daily but I’m at least committing to a couple times a week of either taking the dog for a walk for 30 minutes or playing with the boy outside for that amount of time.  Sometimes both if I can. This is hard because again I feel tired, stressed and not like I have time to do it but I’m trying, really trying

  10. Eating – this area also needs a lot of work for us. We are a house that will have cereal for dinner at least one time during the week. I’ve never mastered meal prepping and quite honestly cooking isn’t a bunch of fun for me. If you have ideas of how you do this and it’s working, please share!

  11. Tablets down. We have a rule that there are no tablets or phones at the table. We might be eating cereal but at least we’re also having to look at each other while doing it

  12. Breakfast time – while my son is eating his breakfast before school I go down and have a cup of coffee sitting with him. It’s a few minutes of the day where I can focus on him and he can talk about anything he wants. I’ve really started making those few minutes count and giving him my full attention

I also periodically take the Adrenal Fatigue test to see how I’m doing and track my progress. It’s been my personal self-check now for at least the past 6 months of how I’m doing dealing with the stress of life and taking care of myself.

If you have other tricks you’re finding work please share.
