Naturally Clean

Updated: Aug 28, 2019

Last year I changed our household cleaner to the doTERRA OnGuard Concentrate. Since I’ve switched I’ve purchased 3 bottles of this cleaner. That’s an entire year of having to only purchase a cleaner 3 times! If I want to be technical about it, I actually only purchased 2 for my own use and I ended up splitting up and sharing the 3rd bottle with friends who also wanted to try it but still that’s like hardly buying cleaner at all. As you’re reading this you’re probably thinking it’s because I gave up cleaning my house. Oh how I wish THAT were true!

I’ve now used this cleaner for an entire year in my home. This is my honest feedback on what I’ve seen happen and what I think of this product and the cost impact it’s had to our family budget.

Cost Comparison

This 12 ounce bottle costs $14.50 wholesale and $19.33 retail. With an account you can get the cleaner for the wholesale price. This is easy to do and works like many other exclusive member only stores like Sam’s Club, Costco, Amazon Prime.

Compared to other cleaners I used to purchase the cost is actually less because what I found was I use much less of this cleaner and the bottle lasts me 6-7 months compared to the 3-4 months of the cleaners I was using. The cleaners I was purchasing cost between $5 – $8 dollars per bottle and came from your typical grocery store, general big box store or Amazon. I was also purchasing multiple products that were replaced with this single product.

Since using up the other cleaners I had and using this one, I estimate I saved approximately $80 last year on cleaners.

Bottle Contents

This cleaner consists of:

  1. Proprietary doTERRA On Guard Protective Blend of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oil provides natural protection by keeping surrounding areas clean and safe

  2. Plant-based surfactants help improve the cleaning process as well as contribute to a product that is safe for you, your family, and the environment

  3. No preservatives added, helping to provide a safe and effective household cleaning product

You can learn more about this product from the doTERRA website:

The average bathroom cleaner contains significant chemicals and toxins that rated high for risk to your health and that of your family and pets. From skin irritations, asthma, allergies and diseases there is significant risk reduction when using the OnGuard Concentrate.

OnGuard Concentrate is highly concentrated so that also accounts for the smaller sized bottle necessary reducing the plastic waste once it is empty. I have upcycled a couple of these bottles for other uses around my home. They make great child paint distributors and can be used to make other cleaners. With the ingredients in this product being entirely plant based there is no risk of chemicals or harmful after effects from reusing the bottle.

For being safe, environmentally friendly, low in toxic exposure and containing no harmful chemicals I definitely give this product a big thumbs up.

The First Bottle

I bought the first bottle of OnGuard Concentrate to try. It was an experiment in my journey to find more natural cleaners around the house. My plan was to use this cleaner in one area of the house and see how it did before using it elsewhere. From the instructions on this cleaner, it can be used on dishes, floors, bathrooms, counters and more.

My first use of it occurred in the bathrooms. Nothing tests a product’s ability to clean effectively and easily than using it in a bathroom as far as I’m concerned. So armed in my cute purple gloves that go up to my elbows, a brand new sponge and this cleaner I was going in!

So first the cleaner is highly, highly concentrated so you need a cap full or less to clean an entire room. That sure didn’t seem like a lot but I tried it and agree you need very little cleaner to get the job done. In a sink full of warm water I added a full cap of cleaner since this was the first time I used it.

The cleaner did a great job on the toilet, tub, counter, and tile floor. I also used it on the shower doors and walls. It smells great and my nose didn’t burn like it does when I used other cleaners in the bathroom. The bathrooms were clean! They didn’t smell!

Since this first use, I continue to use a cap full to clean my master bath and other full bathrooms and only a 1/2 cap full to clean my half bath.

The Second Bottle

I still had plenty in this first bottle but after awhile of expanding use of this cleaner throughout my home I honestly got tired of remembering if it was upstairs or downstairs when I needed it. Now I have a bottle upstairs for the bathrooms and one downstairs for the half bath and kitchen.

This second bottle gets used in several areas around the kitchen. I make my own dishwasher tablets using this cleaner, use it as a surface cleaner, counter top spray that I make, quick wipe up and spot cleaner and as a laundry machine cleaner.

Dishwasher Tablets

You can make this into tablets or keep as a powder depending on your preference. I make the tablets so they’re easy to toss in the dishwasher. Here’s the recipe I use:

NOTE: I use 3/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup Borax in this recipe to add in a rinse support for spot free dishes that the Borax helps achieve.

Multi-Purpose Spray

I take a 16 ounce spray bottle and add 3 tablespoons of the cleaner. Then I add 1/2 cup white vinegar and fill the rest with water.

Produce Wash

This cleaner makes a fantastic fruit and veggie wash. 2 Tablespoons in warm water and gently wash your produce.
